Moringa Garden Circle
takes pride in helping maintain the Senory Garden for the Lighthouse of
Broward.
This is a sensory garden designed
to be useful and approachable to the visually impaired. With
exceptions, it is open only to clients of The Lighthouse. Although
there are many stunning plants and blossoms to look at, this
garden also stimulates touch, smell and hearing. With rough-textured
fruit and foliage, fragrant herbs and flowers, visitors can
use other senses to enjoy plants that they can’t see,
or can’t see well. And the garden has signs in Braille,
walkways lined with rope and a curved wall that leads people
by feel from one plant to the next.
The seven Circles of the Fort Lauderdale Garden Club have made this garden their project to maintain, and they are here once a month. "It feels good to be out here working, even if it’s 90 degrees and you’re shvitsing," says Bechard-Butman. "When you leave with broken nails and covered with sweat, you really feel good." On June 26, 2011 an article appearing in the Miami Herald talks about the garden and includes a slide show that captures some of its features.
